      Hi Eamon,

Good question… Eating large amounts of processed red meat has been associated with cancer, therefore we should eat as little processed red meat as possible e.g. sausages, chorizo etc. There is often environmental factors to consider also e.g. smoking.

However, unprocessed red meat e.g. steak provides us with protein, iron and other vitamins e.g. B12, therefore it is okay to red meat in moderation!

Red meats do not give you cancer! You don’t get a cancer for eating red meat. Some journalists got this wrong and now some people think that read meats give you cancer. What happens is that it has been proved that people who eats more processed meat have a bit more probabilities of having colorrectal cancer. This topic is being studied a lot and still we need more studies to know why is happening that and if it is really red meat the cause, because is very complicated to know. What’s more, the evidence is more with the processed meats than the fresh read meat.
Anyway, not all the things that are harmful are banned because supossedly people can have the choice of eating whatever they want. So it is more a political debate even phylosophical, very complicated. Look for example Tobacco, tobacco is toxic and increases cancer rates, yet you can buy it.. Same with alcohol. Also sweet drinks and sweets are related with obesity and diabetes and they are not banned.
